Hi All

Just recently my eyes have become quite sore, does anyone think this could be related to RA.

I have worn glasses for many years but only for reading computer tv etc, but now find I am wearing them all the time.

I was using the new optrex spray, but thats not helping now.

Anyone else had this problem.

Hi Anne
I have a problem with dry eyes which is related to the RA. It makes them very sore and scratchy.
I am now under an opthamologist who has given me eye drops and cream for night time use.
I was referred to the opthamologist by my optician.

Hope you manage to get some help

Sue

Hi Anne

"Dry Eye" (and dry anything else for that matter) is a common symptom of RA. Your doctor should be able to prescribe drops in the form of 'tears' to relieve this.

Hi

I have found gel tears really helpful. I have secondary sjrogens (to do with the RA) apparently causes dry eyes, dry mouth and dry other things as a LadyBlushing

I've got the same as Jenni - and have the same meds. My Rheummy said the Optrex spray at £14 or whatever is a complete waste of money and will not help one jot.

I have Sjogrens too - and have my glasses made up with a slight tint to the lens which cuts back on glare and makes reading easier. Only downside is that you will also need a non-tinted pair for night driving. Hypermellose straight from the fridge feels nice! XX Ailsa

Viscotears tend to last longer as they are more of a gel. Hypermellose is a liquid which is quickly washed away from the surface of the eye. Both are great depending on how you want to use them. Lacrilube is really good for dry eyes at bedtime but no good during the day ... its greasy and can end up all over your face ... nice!Blink

I use both of these. Prefer viscotears. Word of warning about Isopto Alkaline (generic hypomellose). If you don't remove the spikey twisty plastic locking thing after you have opened it might fall in your eye - as it did mine and scratched my cornea. As luck would have it, I was waiting for an optician's appointment at the time. My gp says she can't prescribe whatever she gave me before (which is same drug branded) because of funding issues. So they save money on the drug which comes in cheap dangerous packaging and spend more on treating my scratched cornea........hmm

I had the lenses replaced (as in cataract op.) in both my eyes about 3 years ago. A lot of damage had been caused and I was slowly losing my eyesight. The ops were the only way forward. I have never been able to establish whether it was simply a result of RA or the use of steroids, both or each could be responsible. Guess it doesn't matter which ... the outcome is the same! Keep a lookout guys for deteriorating vision and get it checked regularly.
